Merupakan salah satu budaya Jawa. Tradisi sungkeman biasanya diadakan untuk melengkapi acara tertentu misalnya acara pernikahan. Arti sungkeman sendiri berasal dari kata sungkem yang berarti bersimpuh atau duduk berjongkok sambil mencium tangan. Sungkeman merupakan wujud bakti anak kepada orang tua sekaligus sebagai tanda hormat anak kepada orang yang dianggap sebagai orang yang dituakan.  ( sungkem.com )

Sementara itu di masa lalu, di Jawa, pernikahan yang diatur oleh orang tua sangat terkenal dan sering diterapkan. Perempuan tidak memiliki hak untuk memilih pasangan mereka. Suka atau tidak, mereka harus menerima pasangan mereka yang dipilihkan oleh orang tua mereka. Mungkin kawin lari adalah satu-satunya cara untuk memecahkan masalah jika seorang gadis tidak mau menikah dengan pasangan yang dipilihkan oleh orang tuanya. Tapi terima kasih Tuhan, pernikahan yang diatur oleh orang tua hampir tidak ada lagi saat ini.

Is one of the Javanese culture. Sungkeman tradition usually held to complete certain events such as weddings. The meaning of sungkeman  is derived from the word  sungkem that means kneeling or squatting, kissing parent's hand. Sungkeman is a form of  a child's devotion to the  parents as well as a mark of a child's respect to those who are considered as the elder person.

Meanwhile in the olden days, in Java, marriage that arranged by the parents also well known and often applied. Girls have no rights to choose their couples. Like or not, they have to accept their mates who choosen by their parents. Maybe eloped is the only way to solve the problem if a girl doesn't want to marry the mate who choosen by her parents.  But thanks God, a marriage that arranged by the parents almost doesn't exist anymore  nowadays.

The words in the picture in English reads as follows.  The mother said to her girl, "this is what happened, girl, if you don't obey your parent. Don't want to marry with the man who choosen by your parent." The girl replied, "I ask for forgiveness, mother. Now I submitted. Whatever  happen to me, I  obey."
